Smoke Dampers are defined as a device installed in ducts and air transfer opening of an air distribution or smoke control system designed resist the passage of air and smoke. The device operates automatically and is controlled by a smoke detection system. They can be opened or closed from a remote fire command station if required. Their primary function is to prevent the passage of smoke through the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, or from one side of a fire-rated separation to the other.
This device is actually used inside air transfer outlets and air ducts of the smoke control or air distribution system. It is specifically designed to automatically close whenever it senses heat or smoke. Additionally, it interrupts the migratory airflow, stops flames from spreading by obstructing its flow from the place on fire to the unaffected places. Smoke Dampers are operated by a smoke or temperature sensor which typically provides signal to the actuator once the smoke or temperature reaches set limit. The actuator then moves the blades in closed position & shut off the fire from spreading in other premises. These devices are generally installed near the wall or the floor, right at the point where the duct penetrates the wall for retaining the integrity as well as the fire rating of the walls or the floor.
