 Rectangular Sound Attenuator  A to Z Products
 Introduction
 
COSMOS Sound Attenuator's were developed to various requirements from the consulting engineers, owners & contractors. They provide the most economical choice for solving the wide range of noise control issues encountered in the HVAC field.

The COSMOS range of rectangular attenuators provides optimized acoustic performance for application where high levels of noise reduction are required. These attenuators are suitable for most applications incorporating sound attenuation and airflow. For example;
 
HVAC air distribution system
The control of fan noise and cross talk attenuation are typical HVAC applications for these attenuators. The standard construction is ideal for this type of applications.
Industrial Machinery
Heavy duty constructions are available for industrial applications incorporating thick wall mild casings, heavy duty flanges and supports.
Acoustic Splitter Only
The splitter elements can be supplied separately for applications such as concrete or builders work air risers.
 
 
  Construction
 
All attenuator casings are constructed of galvanized sheet metal gauge 20 minimum. Casing is formed with duct sealant. End flanges are supplied and are typically proprietary system although other flange systems are available on request. Other Casing materials are available upon request.

The splitter modules are constructed from galvanized sheet steel. The splitters have conical end at the air flow direction to minimize air pressure loss and regenerated noise. The acoustic material is protected behind a layer of galvanized perforated sheet steel. Air is allowed to pass through the airways between the splitters while noise is absorbed in the acoustic material contained within the splitters.

Various configurations of airway size and length are available. Higher acoustic performance is achieved by lengthening the attenuator and by decreasing the airway size.

Sound Attenuators are available in Square, Rectangular they can be fabricated as straight, reduced and elbowed duct.
 
To satisfactorily select an attenuator the following information is required.
 
Attenuator insertion loss required
Air flow passing through the attenuator
The maximum allowable air flow resistance (pressure loss)
Physical size constraints
 
  Selection procedure
 
The first step in selecting a suitable attenuator configuration is to choose a model that meets the required insertion loss. This will determine the length and module width of attenuator.

The next step is to determine the width and height of the attenuator. The height can be selected to suit the application.

Thirdly calculate the pressure loss and regenerated noise. The air flow through the attenuator is required for both calculations. If the pressure loss and/or regenerated noise are too high then the width and/or height of the attenuator need to be increased.
 
  Installation
 
Special care must be taken when installing attenuators to ensure maximum performance is achieved. Attenuators are best located where duct work passes through walls bridging high to low noise level areas. They should not be located in the immediate blast area of fans or close to bends as this will adversely affect the noise regeneration and pressure loss. In some instances it may be necessary to isolate the attenuator from duct‐borne vibration to achieve maximum efficiency.
